The "If I had to pay, I'd just call the clerk" point is well taken. One-on-one interaction is the most expensive way to transmit information. We already bear the expense of putting the information on a computer for the courts' use -- why not just make that information available for all interested parties directly off the computer, more cheaply than paying clerks to answer phones. Even without charging a fee to customers (taxpayers who want public information), the state will save enormous sums paying fewer employees and recapturing lost productivity.
